Wacky Wine Facts
Wine has been around forever, even back to the Biblical days we’ve heard stories about wine and its many uses. There are many facts about wine that have floated around through the years, some myth and some facts.
Although it’s a much believed fact that the more expensive a wine is, the better it is, which is not always true. The price tag you see on a bottle of wine will depend of different factors including the types of grapes used in the winemaking, the land where the vineyard is located, the price of the packaging, the winery’s reputation as well as how they age the wine. So, don’t let the price fool you, whether it’s ridiculously expensive or very cheap.
Another myth is that there is the same amount of alcohol in all wines. The amount of sugar that has converted during the fermentation process is what determines the level of alcohol in any certain wine. Some wines have their alcohol content increased by fortifying it with alcohol. Because we’ve always heard the importance of aging a good wine, most believe that aged wine is so much better than young wine. This also is a myth because not every type of wine needs aging. Red wines with high tannins are the types of wine that require the most aging as well as some varieties of white wines. Many wines, however, are designed to be drunk with no aging at all. In fact, some may taste worse after aging.
Another wine myth is that wines that contain sulfates will cause you to develop a headache. It’s been stated that only about 1% of our population gets headaches from sulfates and these are usually also asthma sufferers. White wine will have more sulfates than red wine.
Do not be one of the many that believe that only cheap wines use screw tops. It’s not uncommon to see a very expensive wine with a screw top. Many wineries are using screw tops to avoid their wines being contaminated by the cork. Unlike what you may have heard, wines do not need to breathe. The only time wine needs to breathe is if it requires more aging.
Regardless of what you may have heard about when wine was discovered, it’s been found that the Chinese have been making their own wine and alcoholic beverages since 6,000 B.B. These findings stem from their Chinese pottery, which has signs of tartaric acid, an organic acid which is found in wine.
Did you know….
It will tell you what class of wine (fruit wine, sparkling wine, table wine, etc.) you have right on the label.
The alcohol percentage on table wines is from 7 to 14%.
The year that a wine was bottled is not always the same as its vintage year as some white wines are not even bottled in the same year as when the grapes were picked.
The most expensive wine in the world is made in Pomerol at the Chateau Petrus. This exquisite wine can sell for $2,500 or more. Guess, you could call this a “rich” wine.
If you’re going to be doing some heavy duty wine sampling, start with the light whites, move toward the full bodied whites, then the light reds and make dark reds your last sample.
When a certain wine goes well with a certain food, the combination is said to have synergy, which means the two together have developed a third flavor.
The use of wine corks is much more than just as bottle toppers as many of these are being used to make personalized wine gifts. Wine gifts such as wine totes, cheese boards or wine carriers make the perfect choice for that difficult to buy for person.
